Australian tennis player John Millman, currently ranked 55th in the world, just knocked Roger Federer out of the US Open.

The upset has stunned the tennis world. Millman beat Federer after a gripping four sets 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, 7-6.

He is the first Australian to defeat Federer in a grand slam match since Pat Rafter in 1999.

After the match, Millman admitted he surprised himself. It was his first victory against a top 10 player.

“A little bit of disbelief, he’s been a hero of mine,” he replied to being asked how it felt to defeat one of the greatest tennis player of all time.

“He’s definitely not at his best, but I’ll take it.”

Others also noticed Federer wasn’t playing at his usual level.

The 29-year-old from the coastal city of Brisbane will advance into the next round where he will play Novak Djokovic.

Federer has been knocked out of the competition.

Before the match, Federer said he was “a big fan of John,” having trained with him in the past.

“Maybe not that many people know him, but he’s a real hard-working guy out there and those are the guys who have all the respect from us top players in the locker room,” Federer said.

“He’s just come to Switzerland to train with me before the grass-court season so we know each other quite well, a super friendly guy, and I’m very happy for him that he’s gotten so far.

“But now I’ll try to stop him, so we’ll see how it goes.”

It was only in July this year that the Aussie up-and-comer entered the world’s top 50, climbing to a career-high ranking of No.49.
